Arsenal Women have hit the ground running and kept their 100% record intact this weekend, opening an interesting gap overall Champions League place contenders except Birmingham.

Joe Montemurro’s side had to work hard and come back twice against West Ham in a very entertaining 4-3 win.

Danielle van de Donk was voted the Supporters’ club player of the match thanks to her hat-trick, while Kim Little scored a crucial goal to make it 4-2.

In the meantime, Birmingham were the only team to record a win among those vying for a Champions League spot. They won 1-0 away at Reading and have, like Arsenal, a 100% record. They can beat anyone and are a resilient side that could sustain a challenge all the way into the second half of the season.

Chelsea and City dropped two points with their respective draws away to Everton (0-0) and at home to Bristol (2-2).  The Vixens have emerged as surprise contenders this season having already drawn with the two main title contenders.

Chelsea have recorded three 0-0 draws in the League and a 5-0 away win the Champions League. It is obvious that their League drought will end soon so being six points clear of them already is a very good, if unexpected, thing.

City have one win and two draws in the League and another draw in the Champions League. They have a tough return game in midweek before going away to Birmingham on Sunday. We are four points clear of them and, again, it is an unexpected bonus.

West Ham lost on Sudnay to the Gunners but have shown that a top four place is not out of their reach. They are outsiders, of course, but could take points of Champions League contenders, like they did against Reading.

The table looks like this

Arsenal have a bye on matchday four and could drop to second place should Birmingham get a point or more against City. The gap with the other teams will probably be reduced.

Our next League game will be a mouth-watering trip to Chelsea on 14th October.
