Valencia CF are interested in signing Danny Welbeck before the European transfer deadline at the end of the month, according to reports in Spain.

Super Deporte report that Valencia have contacted Arsenal over Welbeck’s transfer. The news appears to come largely via The Times in England, but the Spanish outlet have added some of their own information in.

They write that the La Liga side are considering the route they took with Simone Zaza, loaning the player first with an option to buy in the deal. Right now, their preferred option for this method is Michy Batshuayi of Chelsea, and they’re in the midst of negotiations for the Belgian striker.

Batshuayi’s departure doesn’t seem to make much sense at the moment though. Alvaro Morata continues to under-perform, and Chelsea seem to be using Olivier Giroud in roughly the same way Arsenal did, as a super sub. The 24-year-old may find himself getting chances in the starting eleven before long, if he sticks around.

Welbeck, on the other hand, has to displace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, plus the upcoming Eddie Nketiah looking for games. He could move out wide, but there he faces competition from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Özil, Reiss Nelson, Joel Campbell and Alex Iwobi.

We’ll see who Valencia end up going for, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Welbeck showed an interest in the move.
