Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed the club’s interest in Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson, but says there are still details to finalise before a deal goes through.

Speaking to the press this morning, Nagelsmann admitted the rumours were true about Hoffenheim’s attempts to bring the 18-year-old to the Bundesliga. He didn’t confirm whether it would be a loan deal or on a permanent basis, although media reports at the moment suggest a temporary move is the most likely option.

“We are interested in Reiss Nelson, I can say this openly,” Nagelsmann said, openly. “But the obligation is not yet fixed, there are still things to clarify. If it works, we get a player with a lot of speed, who can do a lot of things.”

Nelson does have a fair amount of speed, although his strength is probably more in his agility, as is often the case with shorter footballers. He uses that fact to his advantage, twisting and turning to put defenders on the back foot, giving him a chance to get a cross in or take a shot on.

Still just 18 years old, Nelson made 16 appearances for the Arsenal first team last season, and played a very positive part in pre-season with the club as well.

Most likely he would’ve earned himself more opportunities with the senior side in the Europa League and League Cup, but clearly he’d prefer a more regular starting spot for the coming campaign.

As long as it’s just a loan, and Nelson extends his current deal past 2019, I’m sure Arsenal fans won’t mind that. If he has a good year and comes back ready for the Gunners’ first-team, it can only be a good thing.
