Nacho Monreal has admitted the team probably performed worse against West Ham United than Chelsea, but still thinks they’re on the right track under Unai Emery.

Monreal had to be on hand to score an equaliser for Arsenal on Saturday, as the team slipped to an early deficit courtesy of Marko Arnautovic’s finish. The Gunners went on to get a 3-1 win, but it certainly wasn’t straightforward.

Speaking after the game, Monreal admitted the team are still a work in progress right now, and they probably played better against Chelsea. It was all about the three points against West Ham though, and thankfully that’s exactly what they took away from the Emirates Stadium.

“Well, obviously we have started a new era with a new manager so we have to keep improving,” he said. “For example, against Chelsea we did an excellent job but we conceded three goals and got zero points, and today we have to admit that we probably played worse than the other day, but we won the game so we have to keep improving.

“I think we are in the right way and we are learning every day in training. I think we’re going to keep improving.”

It’s good to hear the players admit that just because they got the win doesn’t mean they performed as well as they could have.

After all the clear cut chances the team made against Chelsea, they only scored two goals, and lost. Then they scored three and won when they weren’t quite as fluid against West Ham.

You ride your luck sometimes, but if Arsenal can combine attacking performances like the one in the first half at Stamford Bridge with more clinical finishing and a half-decent defence, that would be ideal. For now, they’ll take the three points.
