Former Liverpool assistant manager Alex Miller thinks Steven Gerrard would only leave his job at Rangers if Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United come calling.

Miller worked with Steven Gerrard at Liverpool for a number of years, as an assistant to Rafa Benitez and Gerard Houllier, so he has a better idea than most of us of what the former player is like. According to the 69-year-old, Gerrard will stick with his current role unless one of the above three clubs make a move for him.

“Rangers will mount a challenge to Celtic,” he said. “And if you make a go of the Rangers job, why would you leave? It would need to be Liverpool, Manchester United, or Arsenal.”

Leaving Rangers to manage Manchester United would certainly be a very controversial career path for a Liverpool legend, so personally I think we could probably rule that one out as well.

Whether the top English clubs are ever interested in hiring Gerrard will largely depend on how he does with his current club.

Rangers went unbeaten in their pre-season preparations and Europa League qualifiers, beating Wigan and Bury in friendlies and knocking Osijek and Shkupi out of European contention. Not a bad start for the new boss.

On the other hand, they could only manage a draw against Aberdeen in their opening league game on Sunday. In their defence, they led 1-0 with 10 men for a whole hour before Anderson’s 93rd minute equaliser. We’ll have to see how the rest of the campaign goes for Gerrard’s team.
