Jack Wilshere will sign for Turkish club Fenerbahce this week, after former Arsenal teammate Mesut Özil convinced him it was a good move, according to reports in the country.

Over the weekend, Turkish journalist Aygun Ozipek confirmed the England international would travel to Istanbul this week, to sign the contract and join the club. Meanwhile, Turkish outlet Sporx explain that one of the key motivating factors behind the transfer was none other than Arsenal’s chief playmaker, Mesut Özil.

The 29-year-old reportedly told Wilshere that Fenerbahce is “a great team, the fans are spectacular”, adding that Turkey is a “very beautiful and modern country”. The comments were seemingly effective in convincing the midfielder.

Sporx also confirm Ozipek’s comments about the timing of the player’s signature. They claim that after visiting the Fenerbahce facilities, Wilshere returned to England to take care of some business, but now he’ll fly back out to Turkey to sign the deal. He’s set to agree a four-year contract with his new club.

Arsenal officially confirmed Wilshere’s release on Friday, along with the likes of Per Mertesacker and Santi Cazorla. His contract with the Gunners came to an end of the weekend, and he’s now free to move wherever he likes on a free transfer. Seemingly he’s decided on Fenerbahce, but we’ll wait for their announcement to be sure.
