Arsenal are interested in signing Barcelona’s Andre Gomes this summer, with Unai Emery identifying the player as his next target, according to reports.

The reliable Di Marzio confirmed on Tuesday that both Arsenal and Tottenham want the midfielder, whose valuation is set at €40m. They write that the Gunners are currently the favourites to sign the former Valencia man.

According to ESPN, head coach Emery is pushing Arsenal’s move for the player. Gomes wasn’t initially a target for Sven Mislintat or Raul Sanllehi, despite Sanllehi’s close links to Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the Independent write that Barcelona want £30m for the midfielder. They add that Emery is willing to sell to raise funds for the 24-year-old if necessary, claiming the Spanish coach is ‘hugely interested’ in the player.

Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona have already rejected offers from four different clubs for Gomes, and there’s no suggestion that Arsenal were one of the four. We should therefore expect a lot of competition for the signing.

Nonetheless, it seems inevitable that the Catalan club will sell in the end. Gomes only made six league starts in the entirety of last season, and he has almost no chance of reaching his potential if that treatment continues in the coming years.

We’ll see if Arsenal are the club he chooses to move on to.
