Tottenham Hotspur are set to ‘hijack’ Arsenal’s move for Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, who is set to leave the La Liga club this summer, according to reports.

The Daily Star call it a ‘hijack’ in their article on the subject, as they relay reports from Italy’s TransferMarketWeb that Gomes is ‘more and more of a target for Tottenham’.

Arsenal were previously one of the favourites for the player with the media, but after the signings of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi that talk died down a bit. In reality, it doesn’t look like the club are still making moves to be hijacked anyway.

The Star claim Arsenal are still interested though. They say Unai Emery is searching for a player to replace Aaron Ramsey, just in case the Welshman decides to leave this summer. Ramsey only has a year left on his contract, so if he doesn’t extend it soon, that may yet still happen.

The problem with that claim is that Ramsey and Gomes aren’t similar players. The Arsenal man’s biggest strength is that he helps out at both ends of the pitch, scoring and assisting bags of goals whilst also having the engine to get back when the team lose the ball.

Gomes, meanwhile, managed one assist and no goals in 31 appearances last season. Between him, Granit Xhaka and Torreira, there really isn’t much offensive threat. It’s not a move I’d expect to go through.
