Lucas Torreira has been named in the Guardian’s World Cup team of the tournament, as the competition comes to an end today.

The Guardian put together a team with their picks for the top young performers at the tournament. Torreira made the cut alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Hirving Lozano and a number of fellow Uruguayans.

It’s no surprise, given the way Torreira performed at the tournament. He wasn’t initially a starter for his country, having played very few games for them in the past. However, once he got into the team, there was no way anyone was going to take him out.

In particular, the last-16 performance against Portugal was one to remember. Torreira was unfortunate that Edinson Cavani scored both goals, or the 22-year-old would’ve had a shot at man-of-the-match. He effectively shut down one of the tournament’s top scorers in Cristiano Ronaldo, and battled hard to help his country to victory.

The likes of Luis Suarez and Cavani might struggle to return for another World Cup in four and a half years. However, the core of the team, with Gimenez, Torreira and Bentancur, give Uruguay a good chance of continued success in the future.

Hopefully by 2022 the Arsenal man will have a few club trophies under his belt as well. For now, congratulations to him on an impressive tournament!
