Real Sociedad’s €40m sale of Alvaro Odriozola to Real Madrid could provide them with the funds to make a serious move for Nacho Monreal, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish outlet Fichajes write that after receiving that large sum for Odriozola, Sociedad are already thinking about reinvesting the cash. Their first objective is reportedly to try and sign Arsenal’s 32-year-old left-back.

The La Liga side have made contact with Monreal’s agent, according to Cadena SER, but they know the deal could drag on until the very end of the window.

It’s worth noting that there’s some contention over the exact fee Real Madrid paid for Sociedad’s right-back. Fichajes claim it was €40m, and transfermarkt.com list the same figure. However, Noticias de Gipuzkoa write that the fee was closer to €30m, and Sky Sports don’t give any figure at all.

As long as it’s somewhere over €30m though, it should give them a fair amount of financial firepower in the current window.

You wouldn’t think that Arsenal would want to sell one of their best performing players from last season. Given Monreal’s age, and the fact he only has a year left on his contract, it’s not completely out of the question though.

Sociedad will need to convince Arsenal fairly quickly, because the Gunners would have to go out, find and sign a replacement before the English deadline on 9th August.
