Arsenal are reportedly in talks to sign Steven N’Zonzi from Sevilla, despite David Ornstein’s claim that the club’s first-team business will conclude with Lucas Torreira’s signature.

Sky Sports News kicked off the latest round of N’Zonzi transfer links to Arsenal, writing the Arsenal are ‘in talks’ over the midfielder. Spanish outlet AS added that the player ‘expects to leave this summer’.

There’s a fair amount of evidence stacking up against the deal though. Firstly, Sevilla director of football Joaquin Caparros is still insisting the club haven’t received an offer for the French international, adding that he can’t talk about a deal that doesn’t exist.

Then David Ornstein revealed that the signing of Lucas Torreira ‘finishes 1st team recruitment’ for the summer.

That’s not to say further signings are impossible though. Last summer Ornstein informed supporters that Arsenal didn’t have the cash for another major signing, before they bid £92m for Thomas Lemar on deadline day, and signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a club-record fee a few months later.

Plus, The Independent is today claiming ‘Arsenal are not done with their summer business by any stretch’. It seems like the club are just using Ornstein to manage fan expectations at this point.

Likely it also heavily depends on any sales the club make between now and the end of the window. An influx of cash or a big name departure would surely bring Arsenal back into action. We’ll see if that includes a move for N’Zonzi.
