Mesut Özil’s transfer value has dropped more than anybody else’s at the World Cup, according to analysis in Spain.

Spanish outlet Sport report the findings from El Centro Internacional de Seguimiento Deportivo (The International Centre for Sports Monitoring), claiming Özil’s value has dropped from €54.6m to €50.6m as a result of the tournament. €4m is the greatest drop in value of any World Cup players.

It’s not just the Arsenal playmaker suffering though. Close behind are Marco Asensio and Isco of Real Madrid, dropping €3.7m and €3.1m respectively. Clearly Spain and Germany’s struggles have had a negative effect on some of their star players.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen lost €1.6m in value, despite Denmark having a decent tournament by their standards. That fall obviously had more to do with the player himself, with Eriksen failing to create more than one chance in his last-16 match, before missing his penalty in the shootout.

The World Cup isn’t over, of course. Later today, we have big matches between France and Uruguay, and Brazil and Belgium. There’s still time for a player to make a calamitous error and rush into the lead. For now, though, it looks like Özil is being made to pay for his teammates’ profligacy in front of goal.
