Arsenal may consider selling Aaron Ramsey to sign Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, according to a particularly unwelcome report going around.

The media have linked Arsenal to a move to Gomes in recent days, and head coach Unai Emery is reportedly a long-term admirer. Buying from Barcelona isn’t exactly cheap though, and the Gunners would reportedly need to offer around £30m.

Given the club’s limited summer budget, that might require a sale or two, and The Independent report that they could consider moving on Ramsey. The Welshman is in the final year of his Arsenal deal, so this could be the last chance to cash in on the 27-year-old, if he won’t sign an extension.

On the other hand, this is very likely to go down badly with supporters. One of the main sources of excitement for fans this summer was the idea of a midfield containing Torreira, Xhaka and Ramsey together. Not to mention the fact that the former Cardiff man was the fans’ Player of the Season in 2017/18.

If Arsenal know that Ramsey won’t sign a contract extension, they might be thinking long-term, that it’s better to get Gomes in for four or five years than to keep Ramsey for one.

Still, let’s hope the report is baseless, because letting the midfielder go would be a big blow to the coming campaign.
