More than a decade after folding, Manchester United have launched a new women’s team and one of their newest additions is Arsenal youngster, Lauren James.

The young playmaker, who will turn 17 at the end of September, was fast-tracked to the first team following her successful time with the RTC u16 team.

It is quite surprising to see the Arsenal allow the transfer of such a highly-rated player who could have had a long career at the club. You would have thought she would have been tied to a long-term contract?

While there is no doubt that the young midfielder would have been a rotation player alongside senior players like Jordan Nobbs, Kim Little, Danielle Van De Donk and Lia Wälti, it is disappointing to see her leave.

But if her development is likely to be accelerated at United, it certainly makes sense for her to move on. United write on their website about James, “At 16 Lauren is the youngest member of the squad. A technically very gifted midfielder with great passing ability.

“Lauren has the potential to do whatever she wants to do with hard work. She is technically very gifted and also the baby of our squad. A great addition from Arsenal.”

Considering the number of Arsenal Women youngsters who came through the RTC/COE & Development team that are playing in the FA WSL and in the Championship, it is really disappointing that Leah Williamson is now the only listed squad player who came through the ranks.
