Petr Čech insists he isn’t planning to leave Arsenal this summer, despite learning of interest from elsewhere, and he just wants to fight for starts in North London.

With the arrival of Bernd Leno, first team goalkeepers David Ospina and Petr Čech have had doubt cast over their futures at Arsenal. The media have linked both to moves away from the club, and whilst Čech confirmed the reported interest from Napoli was real, he explained that he’s not thinking about leaving.

“Napoli were interested in me,” he admitted. “But my future is at Arsenal and I do not think about changing clubs. I still have a year of my contract with Arsenal, the only thing I want to think about is fighting for a starting position.”

It’s relatively surprising that Čech seems to have decided against the chance to join a top European club with Champions League football.

It won’t be easy for the former Chelsea man to keep his place in the team, especially under a new manager. He was a key player for Arsenal last season, making 38 appearances, but that’s unlikely to happen again in 2018/19.

Perhaps his decision is based on other factors. The goalkeeper has a family in London after all, so he may not want to leave the country at this stage.

Whatever the reason, it seems we should prepare for another season with the 36-year-old in the squad. Most likely, that means David Ospina is on the way out, but we’ll have to wait and see.
