Lucas Torreira’s father has once again been speaking to the media about his son’s potential move to Arsenal, and he’s starting to make it sound like a done deal.
Speaking to Fox Sports Radio Uruguay, Ricardo Torreira gave the clearest indication yet that his son is planning to join Arsenal this summer.
“It is as good as a fact that Lucas will join Arsenal,” he said (translation by Twitter user @MrArsenicTM). “There are many clubs who contacted us but we have given our word to Arsenal and are very satisfied with what they offered.
“The deal is virtually done, and only the arrival of Lucas in [Colney] is remaining. Arsenal offered to do the medical examinations in Russia but we opted against it because we felt it’s inconvenient. It’s not the right time.
“Arsenal’s plan, for now, is to get Lucas to do his medical, photos & sign the contract after the World Cup. We are already receiving texts from [our] people in England. They all expect Lucas to arrive.”
Torreira’s father also spoke to another Uruguayan outlet, Teledoce, about the move to England.
“There will be people that will accompany him,” he explained (via Goal). “He won’t be alone. It’s a big change [going to England] and we don’t want to think about it yet because we’re scared.
“The truth is it’s tough to manage the language, adapt to the [London] society and customs and at the same time not lose ours. But there’s a whole programme getting readied for Lucas.”
In London nowadays, you can pretty much find someone from any country or culture in the world, so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the Uruguayan. Although, he will be the only Uruguay international in the Arsenal squad.
What next?
As mentioned, Uruguay and Torreira still need to complete their World Cup campaign, whether by elimination or by winning the tournament. The time-frame will therefore be decided almost entirely by Friday’s match against France.
If Uruguay win, they’ll remain in the tournament until the end of next week, because even a semi-final defeat would leave a third-place play-off match to play at the weekend. If they lose, things could move very quickly for Torreira afterwards.
Whenever the tournament ends, let’s hope the club can wrap the signing up without any problems.
