Arsenal will finalise the signing of Lucas Torreira in the coming week, according to reports, with the announcement to come when Uruguay conclude their World Cup campaign.

The Daily Mail write that Arsenal will finalise the deal for the €30m (£26.6m) transfer next week, seemingly regardless of whether Uruguay exit the tournament or not. However, the club won’t announce it until Torreira’s national duty comes to an end.

The reports suggests the fee with Sampdoria is ‘close to being agreed’. Although, various quotes from the player’s friends and family, as well as the president of the Italian club, imply it’s already done.

President Massimo Ferrero told Italian TV the player was ‘gone for €30m’, and the sale was ‘necessary to increase our club’s capital’. Perhaps the Mail are just really playing it safe, with their assessment of the situation.

One thing Arsenal fans are more and more sure of, is that Torreira would be a fantastic signing for the team’s midfield. He particularly shone in his two starts at the World Cup, against Russia and Portugal. He stifled the hosts of the tournament, then shut down Cristiano Ronaldo in the last-16.

Those good performances are starting to make fans nervous about another club coming in to hijack the deal. The sooner Arsenal can finalise it, the better.
