Arsenal’s potential move for Andre Gomes is now off, after the FC Barcelona suffered an injury which will keep him on the sidelines for around two months.

Journalist for Spanish outlet Sport, Albert Roge, writes that Gomes’ injury ends his chances of a permanent move this summer.

Earlier this month Paris United reported that Arsenal had entered into contact with the Barcelona midfielder, and Sport added that the La Liga club would be willing to accept £16m for the player. At the time, they were only interested in a permanent transfer for Gomes.

Now, however, Roge reports that Barcelona could consider allowing Gomes to leave on a loan deal. If he does, it will be to Valencia, not Arsenal. Otherwise, the Portuguese international will remain with his current club for another year.

With Matteo Guendouzi’s impressive start to pre-season, and Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka returning to training, Arsenal probably don’t have much room for another player in central midfield anyway.

In fact, the news about Gomes will probably come as more of a blow to Tottenham Hotspur, who were also after the player. Spurs have just lost Mousa Dembele to injury, albeit a minor one. The media have also linked the Belgian to a move away, so Pochettino could’ve done with another midfielder.

It looks like Gomes’ Premier League move will have to wait a while longer.
