Joel Campbell has revealed that his wife is expecting the couple’s second child.

The Arsenal forward was speaking after his side played their final World Cup group game.

Campbell started the game against Switzerland, which saw the Costa Ricans find the back of the net for the first time during the tournament.

Drawing the game 2-2 against Granit Xhaka’s and Stephan Lichtsteiner’s side, Campbell got his first start of the tournament and grabbed an assist for Costa Rica’s first goal.

Trailing 2-1, they were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute and, needless to say, there was competition over who would get to take it.

“In the end, I wanted to shoot the penalty, like Bryan,” Campbell said.

“It was Bryan’s turn and the important thing is that the ball went in.

“I asked for it, I wanted to score, I wanted to score for the son I’m waiting for and wanted to celebrate again like four years ago, but in the end, this is a team game. The player touched Bryan, he got it and in the end we all celebrate,” he added.

Bryan Ruiz stepped up to take the penalty, hit the underside of the bar and then watched as the ball rebounded on to goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s back and into the net to go down in the history books as an own goal.

Four years ago, at the World Cup in Brazil, Campell scored Costa Rica’s first goal in a 3-1 win over Uruguay. His then-girlfriend was expecting the couple’s first child. He celebrated like this:

Campbell struggled last season with a number of injuries that restricted his playing time to just 142 minutes with only one goal and one assist to his name.

A knee operation during last summer kept him sidelined until October. That was followed by a sprained ankle just a couple of weeks later that kept him out even longer.

He only returned to action at the start of March after 126 days out.

At this point, it’s hard to know what the future holds for Campbell.

Some would argue that he showed enough during his time playing for Arsenal to be given a chance.

Others would say that after being an Arsenal player for seven years, six loan spells indicates a player who will never make a career for himself in the red half of north London.

Campbell has never really complained about being shunted around Europe by Arsenal nor about the lack of opportunities afforded to him by his parent club.

He would be right to think he did enough in the 15/16 season to at least warrant a place on the fringes of the first team. Three goals and three assists in 19 Premier League appearances tell only half the story of a man given, on average, 46 minutes per game.

I don’t think that Joel Campbell is an exceptional player but he is better than he gets credit for and it must surely be time for him to find a permanent home.

According to transfermarkt his contract with Arsenal runs out this summer. Perhaps this is the time he finally gets to do that.
