Arsenal are one of two clubs interested in FC Porto midfielder Hector Herrera, according to reports in Portugal, but face strong competition from Olympique Lyonnais.

O Jogo report the rumours that Lyon are hoping to ‘close’ a deal for Herrera for €30m, following a conversation with the Porto club president. However, they’re not the only ones, with ESPN in Herrera’s home country of Mexico reporting that Arsenal are also in for the midfielder.

Herrera is the captain of his current club in Portugal, where he’s played since 2013. Now 28 years old, he’d make a bit of a strange signing for Arsenal, as he’s neither a young talent for the future, nor particularly experienced at the very top of European football.

As a player, he’s very effective in possession, consistently passing accurately and creating chances, as well as helping to win the ball back when his team lose it. However, with the seemingly imminent acquisitions of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, Arsenal don’t really need another central midfielder this window.

Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are all already preparing to fight for starting spots in the coming season. Perhaps Arsenal are just scouting out some options in case a big club comes in for Ramsey late in the window. Hopefully the Welshman is encouraged by Arsenal’s window and sticks around though.
