Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has told their transfer podcast that two Arsenal transfer deals will be done in the near future, with another one potentially to come.

As most of us know by now, reports suggest Sokratis Papastathopoulos is near certain to sign for Arsenal at this stage. The club are just waiting until July for financial reasons. Sheth confirmed that’s the case, before adding that Lucas Torreira is almost as close to joining.

“Lichtsteiner is in, Bernd Leno is in and Sokratis will sign on July 1,” he said. “The reason is: Borussia Dortmund want to announce that at the start of the new tax quarter in Germany. There are financial reasons which I cannot even begin to go into. Lucas Torreira as well, that looks like it’s imminent.”

At this stage, those two transfers look like they’re pretty much just formalities. The tax year and the World Cup are the only things getting in the way of the deals being announced, and hopefully they should be Arsenal players in the next few weeks.

Sheth then also confirmed Arsenal are after a winger, saying: “There’s also interest in the Portugal winger Gelson Martins. All of these transfers seem to fit Emery’s profile.”

If Arsenal could get all of these moves over the line in the next month or so, they would’ve gone a long way to addressing the main problems with the squad from last season.

Petr Cech and David Ospina weren’t good enough in goal, so the club signed Bernd Leno. Jack Wilshere was out of form and then out of contract, Lucas Torreira is joining to replace him.

Hector Bellerin was completely overplayed all year, Stephan Lichtsteiner can provide some backup. Arsenal’s defence was poor and the club lost two centre-backs to long-term injury and retirement, Sokratis will hopefully replace their experience in the back line.

Let’s hope they all settle in well.
