Aaron Ramsey’s contract talks are progressing positively, as Unai Emery looks to finalise his midfield for the coming campaign, according to reports.

The Telegraph write that Emery has identified Ramsey and Xhaka as the two current senior midfielders key to the team’s future. As a result, he moved to tie the Swiss international down until 2023. Now, the expectation is that Ramsey will follow.

The club have been in negotiations over a ‘new four or five-year contract’, according to Jeremy Wilson. Those talks are ‘progressing positively’, and Ramsey is ‘enthused’ by the chance to work with the new head coach next season.

The question that still remains is over who will partner those two. Towards the end of last season, Jack Wilshere regularly got the nod, but he’s leaving the club in July. As a result, Emery is trying to finalise a deal for Lucas Torreira, to complete the midfield trio.

The report adds the ‘it is hoped that a deal to bring the 22-year-old [to Arsenal] can be progressed once he finishes his World Cup involvement with Uruguay’.

Although this doesn’t exactly make it sound like a done-deal, the fact that Sampdoria officials are openly admitting they’ve agreed a deal to sell him makes it seem like a formality at this stage.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Elneny and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are reportedly going to remain as squad options for next season. They’re still likely to get a lot of game time, given Arsenal’s Europa League participation and the fact that there are three midfield slots. Players will need rests at some stage, before we even think about injuries.

It’s all looking good for Arsenal’s future midfield at the moment. Hopefully Emery can get the players to sign those contracts as soon as possible.
