Steven N’Zonzi hinted he’s thinking about a summer move, speaking to the media whilst on World Cup duty with France.
Ever since the appointment of Unai Emery, the media have very predictably linked Arsenal to a summer move for the Sevilla midfielder. After all, Emery was the man to bring the Frenchman to his current club in the first place.
N’Zonzi added more fire to the flames, with a not-exactly-glowing review of his current club.
“I am feeling very good at Seville but they are not the biggest club in Europe,” he admitted. “Playing with high profile players in a big team could be a good progression for me.”
However, he did look to downplay that any move could be imminent, insisting the France squad are focusing on their football, for now.
Despite the comments about wanting to play for a ‘big team’, an Arsenal move for N’Zonzi is looking increasingly unlikely. The club have just handed a new contract to Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and look close to completing a deal to bring in Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.
From the looks of things, Torreira, Ramsey and Xhaka could fill the three midfield spots in the team. Wilshere (if he stays), Maitland-Niles, and Elneny are there for competition as well. N’Zonzi would have no guarantees of a first team place at all.
With the club’s limited budget, spending big on yet another midfielder would be strange. There are plenty of other concerning areas in the team. We’ll see if this one goes any further after the World Cup.
