Arsenal are not trying to sign Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, according to reports, with one club source describing the reports as ‘complete garbage’.

Football.London reveal the update from a source inside the club, who claims that Fellaini “is not on the agenda for Arsenal”.

Reports on Monday suggested that the club were set for talks with the Belgian early in the week. The mainstream media picked up the story and ran with it, and by the end of the day it almost seemed like a done deal.

In reality, it seems more likely Fellaini’s representatives were just trying to generate some interest to get their client a better deal, wherever he goes next. It wouldn’t be the first time an agent has used Arsenal’s name to further their negotiations elsewhere, I’m sure.

Based on the reaction of Arsenal fans to Fellaini links on Monday, this seems to be the news they were hoping for. Many have called for more physicality in midfield, but clearly the 30-year-old doesn’t fit their expectations.

Fellaini is part of the Belgium World Cup squad travelling to Russia this summer. Their first game is Monday 18th June, so hopefully we should have some closure on the situation by then.
