Jasper Cillessen ‘wants to leave’ Barcelona this summer, and hopes to move somewhere he can get minutes and ‘feel important’, according to reports in Spain.

RAC1 reporter Gerard Romero wrote on Twitter that the player is looking for a club that will give him more game time next season, apparently telling his friends about his desire to leave. Romero initially claimed Cillessen has a €40m release clause, but later corrected this to €60m.

RAC1 are usually one of the more reliable sources for Barcelona news, although any story based on what a player ‘told his friends’ should be taken with a pinch of salt. The fact this Cillessen departure story keeps cropping up suggests there’s something in it though.

On Monday, we heard reports from Germany that Barcelona are already looking to replace the goalkeeper, and are planning a bid for Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

Before that, another Spanish journalist, Alfredo Martinez, claimed Arsenal and Liverpool both have offers on the table for Cillessen.

Cillessen himself played down exit rumours when he spoke to the media about the situation. However, he did admit he’d have no problem joining either of the English clubs if Barcelona want him out.

The goalkeeper only made 11 appearances in 2017/18, but played well when given the opportunity, keeping eight clean sheets. We’ll see if Arsenal convince him they can offer him more chances next season.
