Arsenal join Liverpool and Tottenham in the race for 20-year-old PSV winger Steven Bergwijn, according to reports in the Netherlands.

De Telegraaf report that there’s ‘massive interest’ in the player from the three clubs, who have ‘closely followed’ him in recent months. PSV want between €15m and €20m for Bergwijn’s signing, after rejecting a €12m bid from Torino last summer.

Game time will reportedly be one of the key factors in the player’s decision over what to do next. That should give Arsenal an advantage, as they have a history of giving chances to young players, and a lack of natural wide players in the current first team squad.

Bergwijn had an impressive season for PSV, scoring eight goals and assisting 11 over the course of the campaign. It was in 2018, after the winter break, that he really started to hit his stride though. The youngster scored six goals and provided six assists in just 15 matches after the turn of the year.

Given Arsenal’s reportedly limited budget, the club can’t really afford to splash big money on another forward, especially when there are so many problems at the back to address. Bergwijn could therefore provide a cheaper alternative to potentially fill the gap in the squad.

We’ll see how things progress in the coming weeks.
