Arsenal likely won’t go back for Thomas Lemar this summer, thanks to Arsene Wenger’s decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Express reports that with Wenger going, the club are ‘unlikely to pursue a deal’. Reportedly neither Arsenal nor Liverpool are anywhere near meeting Monaco’s previous asking price of £100m.

Despite those claims, Lemar himself actually sounded pretty downcast when he spoke to the media recently about missing out on a move to the Premier League.

“Regrets? Maybe,” he said. “I was a little disappointed. Once it’s over, it’s over, so do not think about it. I will keep working hard so these clubs will eventually come back in the next transfer window.”

Unfortunately the player hasn’t really done enough this campaign to justify a mega-money move. He has three goals and nine assists in 36 appearances, nowhere near the numbers he achieved the previous season.

It hasn’t been all bad, and WhoScored still list attributes like key passes, crossing and set pieces as strengths this campaign. The decrease in goal contributions might have more to do with the players around him, particularly Kylian Mbappe leaving for PSG.

Still, even before Wenger’s departure, a move to Arsenal seemed like a long shot. If the club are going to spend close to £100m on a player, they’d be better off making it a central midfielder or defender. Undoubtedly losing such an iconic French manager makes the odds of a Lemar move even worse though.
