Shkodran Musatfi does not expect to be selected for the World Cup according to a report from Germany this morning.

The Arsenal defender has struggled all season and, although his stats place him as one of the best performing Arsenal players of the season, anyone with eyes can tell you that was simply not the case.

“I do not expect much,” the 26-year-old defender told Bild ahead of the provisional German squad announcement on May 15.

“Of course I would like to be there,” added Mustafi. “I have to prove myself in Arsenal’s last matches.”

That might be difficult.

Mustafi was on the bench against Burnley at the weekend and both Calum Chambers and Konstantinos Mavropanos impressed enough to warrant starting in Arsenal’s final two matches.

The German was not selected in the squad for his country’s last two games and has only been used in one of their last eight, playing just 36 minutes against Azerbaijan in October.

Mustafi has been assured by manager Joachim Low that he is watching, however that probably does not work in the defender’s favour.

Germany are expected to name Mats Hummels, and Jerome Boateng in the squad with Antonio Rudiger, Niklas Sule and Matthias Ginter all in the mix to go to Russia ahead of Mustafi.
