Ryo Miyaichi’s terrible luck since joining FC St. Pauli is just getting worse, as it seems he could face another long spell on the sidelines.

Kicker report that an MRI scan on Monday indicated another anterior cruciate ligament rupture for the 25-year-old. His club stated: “A definitive diagnosis can only be made after an arthroscopy, which is to be performed on Thursday at Dr. Heinz -Jürgen Eichhorn in Straubing.”

We’ll have to wait for the results of that test, but for now it doesn’t look good, unfortunately. The Japanese international spent the entire season on the sidelines with an ACL injury until last weekend, when he played 13 minutes before the new injury forced him back off.

The former Arsenal man also missed almost the entirety of the 2015/16 season with the same problem. The 2016/17 campaign is the only one of the last three where he played more than five games, managing 20 that season.

In all, from July 2015 to today, he completed 90 minutes just once in a match.

Miyaichi originally had a trial at Arsenal in the summer of 2010, and signed a professional contract in January the next year. He went on a number of loans to clubs in the Premier League and the Eredivisie, before leaving for St. Pauli.

That should have been his chance to really push on with his career, but injuries are spoiling the opportunity. Hopefully today’s test brings good news, and it’s just a scare.
