The German, who hung up his playing boots at the end of the season, has signed up with DAZN, a paid-for internet streaming service which will show 110 European games next season.

“For me, it was always clear that as long as I’m on the pitch myself, I will not be a TV expert,” said Mertesacker previously.

The BFG has also released his autobiography, launching it at the HDI Arena recently.

Mertesacker will return to Hannover 96 in October for a farewell match at his former club.

The game, due to take place on October 13 with a 3.30pm kick-off, will feature numerous former teammates of the defender.

The 33-year-old signed for Hannover’s youth teams in 1995 when he was just 11. He worked his way up through the ranks, leaving in 2006 to join Werder Bremen before signing for Arsenal five years later.

Takuma Asano, meanwhile, will be hoping he can make a similar impact with the German side as Per. He has signed on loan ahead of the new season.
