Arsenal Women mounted a spirited second half comeback against Manchester City to keep their Champions League hopes alive with a 2-1 victory after being 1-0 down at the break.

Here are the three goals from the game:

First, the City opener after the midfield went missing and van Veenendaal slipped to let Nadim score:

Then, the van De Donk equaliser, early in the second as Arsenal were putting a lot of pressure on the City defence:

This weekend’s results mean Chelsea Ladies are likely to be crowned Champions as they have a six-point lead over Manchester City.

They only need a point from their two remaining games. They have also secured their Champions League place for the 2018/19 season.

For the second Champions League place, City are now only one point ahead of Arsenal in fourth place but have a far superior goal difference – +26 compared to +13.

Third-placed Reading are also still in it, as they are also one point behind City but with only one game to play compared to two for all the other contenders.

The top 4 table looks like this:

  1. Chelsea 38 points  +28
  2. Man City 32 points +26
  3. Reading 31 points +22
  4. Arsenal 31 points +13

The remaining games for the top four teams are as follows :

  • Tue 15 May – Bristol v Chelsea
  • Wed 16 May – Man City v Yeovil , Sunderland v Arsenal
  • Sun 20 May – Birmingham v Reading, Bristol v Arsenal, Liverpool v Chelsea, Man City v Everton

To qualify, Arsenal need City need to drop points while we will  win our remaining two games.

Realistically, it is unlikely to happen.

Yeovil have just scored their first goal of the season and have no wins so far. Everton are in eighth place and it is hard to see them being able to contain the City strike force for 90 minutes.

Considering how far behind the club was when Pedro Losa was sacked, being just one point behind City is a credit to Joe Montemurro’s work this season.

If the summer transfer window brings in quality recruits, there is no reason why the Arsenal should not compete for the title next season.
