The details of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract with Arsenal have leaked to the media, along with the specifics of Alexis Sanchez and Virgil Van Dijk’s deals.

Saturday’s Daily Mail revealed the information for the trio. Aubameyang, who joined Arsenal in January from Borussia Dortmund, apparently cost the club £56.1m, a fee which is due in three instalments. That’s roughly similar to what we already knew, so no surprises there.

The striker earns £10.3m-a-year, or £198k-a-week. In addition, he’ll earn a ‘loyalty’ bonus of £15.15m in four instalments before his deal expires in 2021. That’s £3.8m per season as a reward for sticking around, if the bonus is distributed equally.

He also apparently gets a £2.26m ‘Champions League’ bonus, despite the club failing to qualify for the competition. The Mail don’t give any further explanation of what this bonus is actually for.

Finally, Aubameyang will get a £300,000 bonus if he ever manages 25 goals and assists in a season, and £50,000 for every time he starts and Arsenal win.

How much will he earn next season then?

This campaign, Arsenal won 31 matches (32 if they win on Sunday). Hopefully they’ll win more next season, but even if they do, Aubameyang probably won’t play in all of them. Let’s assume he starts and wins 25.

As for the goal bonus, he’s already on 13 goals and assists after just a few months, he should easily make 25 next season if he stays fit.

Overall, that means he’ll get his £10.3m basic wages, £3.8m loyalty bonus, £300k goal bonus and £1.25m match-win bonus. In total, that’s £15.65m.

Is he worth it?

For me, yes. Arsenal have lacked top quality strikers in recent seasons, and Aubameyang and Lacazette are finally filling that hole in the team. In today’s market, paying a player less than £20m-a-year for the kind of output the Gabonese international regularly achieves is a bargain.

Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, will earn over £20m-a-year in just salary and image rights fees. That’s before all his other bonus payments, such as £75,000 for every match he starts, even if they don’t win.

All that for someone who only has three goals in 16 matches so far. One of those goals against relegated Swansea, another against Huddersfield, who only assured their Premier League safety in mid-week. He did score against Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final, but then winning a semi-final against Mauricio Pochettino’s men is barely even an achievement.

Overall, if we’re paying crazy money to someone, I’m glad it’s a player who has clearly made us more dangerous.
