Arsenal are interested in signing Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur, as the centre-back runs down his contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Alderweireld, who has been at Spurs since 2015, has just one year left on his contract with the club, and doesn’t look particularly likely to renew. Sky Sports write that club and player haven’t made any progress in over a year of talks.

In response to questions about the player, Pochettino told the media in his pre-Leicester press conference that “from Monday we will talk about all that is going to happen next season”.

For now though, it seems fairly likely the player will leave. Charles Watts of Football.London revealed in a Q&A on the website that Arsenal have interest in buying the player. However, he did add that he thinks a move to Manchester is more likely.

As we all know, this isn’t the first time Arsenal have tried to buy a Spurs defender. Sol Campbell joined the Gunners from their North London rivals back in 2001. He went on to win the Premier League and the FA Cup on multiple occasions, more than Spurs have won in the last 25 years.

Alderweireld hasn’t had a particularly strong campaign with his current side, thanks to injuries. A couple of hamstring problems have kept him to just 20 appearances all season. On his day, though, the defender could get into plenty of top sides. Hopefully he uses that fact to force a move away from Tottenham.
