Arsene Wenger won’t continue in club management after leaving Arsenal, and will instead move behind the scenes or to a national team, according to reports in his home country.

Le Parisien reports that Wenger’s inner circle have ruled out the possibility of the Arsenal manager ever managing another club. The report also says PSG want to make the 68-year-old their sporting director, and that he is open to the idea of managing a national team. It seems his time at club level is over though.

Those reports are reiterated by information in The Times, who claim Wenger has no interest in managing another English club.

This isn’t exactly surprising, considering the manager’s long history with Arsenal. After 22 years your connection to a club is going to be as strong as even the most die-hard supporters. I can’t imagine Wenger would ever feel right in charge of Chelsea or Manchester United at this stage.

He could move to France and take over PSG, or similar, but that would still result in a fairly strong possibility of facing his old club before long. The only way to avoid that is to move into the realms of international management.

We’ll see how France do at the World Cup this summer, but if they don’t reach their potential, they’re the obvious choice. Otherwise, I’m sure Wenger’s time at Arsenal makes him perfectly qualified for a sporting director role.
