Max Meyer is reportedly keen on a move to Arsenal this summer when his Schalke contract expires.

The 22-year-old has been named as a potential replacement for Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere such is his talent, although I doubt even Meyer could replace all three at once.

In truth, he’s far more like a Cazorla replacement than someone to cover for the other two, but whatever his best position, Arsenal want him and, if we are to believe reports that emerged over the weekend, he wants Arsenal.

Schalke’s sporting director, Christian Heidel, has already admitted that the player is likely to leave this summer. They have offered him a few contracts to try and get him to extend his deal but it looks as if Schalke will lose yet another top player for nothing when the window opens up.

“Currently, all indications [are] that he will be leaving us,” said Heidel, as reported by the Hamburger Morgenpost at the weekend.

Bild are the ones claiming that Meyer wants to join Arsenal “despite the fact that Arsene Wenger’s side are ‘no longer in the premier class’ coupled with speculation surrounding the Frenchman’s future as the club remains an attractive prospect.”

Meyer currently earns £63kpw meaning Arsenal could afford to double his wages and still not break the top earners bracket at the club.

Arsenal, however, are unlikely to have a free run at the free agent with Meyer coveted by top clubs across the continent. Barcelona, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are just a few of the names that have been linked with the midfielder.

Although Mislintat’s name has been attached to Arsenal’s interest in Meyer, it precedes the head scout’s arrival.

Meyer has been named as a Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere replacement, although it is the Spaniard he is most like as we discussed here.

We also looked at his ability to replace Cazorla in depth here too.

Just over a week ago, Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies told Bild that they had a meeting planned with Meyer and his representative, but at the last minute those plans fell apart.

“I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was cancelled by his agent on short notice,” Tonnies explained.
