Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic is set to turn down a move to Manchester United in favour of joining Arsenal, according to reports in Spain.

El Gol Digital report that both Premier League clubs have shown an interest in the player. United are looking to add some creativity to their side, whilst Arsenal are preparing for the possible departure of Jack Wilshere, assuming he decides not to extend his current contract.

The Spanish outlet claim that if it comes down to a choice between the two, Rakitic has already made his mind up. The 30-year-old prefers Arsenal’s style of play, and thinks it fits better with his own.

It’s true that Arsenal will have to enter the market for midfielders if Wilshere leaves. Santi Cazorla’s contract is also up in the summer, and Francis Coquelin also left in January.

Rakitic is a consistent presence in the Barcelona team, but the fans have never really taken to him. He has four goals and four assists this season in 49 appearances, so maybe they just want more from him.

First things first, Arsenal need to try and qualify for the Champions League. Otherwise Rakitic might end up rethinking his options, and United might look more appealing after all.
