On Tuesday, Liverpool smashed AS Roma at Anfield to put one foot in the Champions League final, but in the process, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up a knee injury.

Just 18 minutes into the match, at 0-0, Chamberlain went into a challenge and twisted his leg awkwardly. At first glance it seemed like a knee injury, but we’ll have to wait for the medical team to provide more details.

Jurgen Klopp seems to be preparing for the worst though.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain, it’s probably a really bad injury,” he told BT Sport. “If we can say that already before the scan, that’s never good news so that means for us it’s a massive blow, of course.

“I am a very positive person and hope it only feels bad but all the medical department are quite concerned without a scan.”

The problem is that the Ox has a history for this kind of injury. In his last four seasons with Arsenal he suffered four serious knee injuries. In total that kept him out for 308 days, or 45 matches. Essentially he lost a full season out of the four to knee problems alone.

Back in August, we even made reference to those knee problems when discussing why Arsenal were so hesitant to try and tie the player down in 2016. It’s always been a worry, and so it seems to be proving again.

On average, his knee injuries kept him out for 77 days, which would just about get him back in time for the World Cup. However, if it’s as serious as Klopp thinks, it could be closer to the 140 days we saw him miss in 2013/14. That would rule him out of the competition completely.

Either way, it looks like his season with Liverpool is probably over, barring some surprisingly good news in the coming days.
