Arsenal think Joachim Low is a ‘suitable candidate’ to replace Arsene Wenger, but the manager himself is reluctant to take the job as he’s worried about burning out with Germany this summer.

That’s according to The Times, who write that the club are aware of the 58-year-old’s reservations.

Reportedly he was physically and mentally drained after Germany’s 2014 win, and has doubts whether he’d be ready to take on a challenge as big as Arsenal’s so soon after the tournament in Russia. He currently still has two years left on his contract with the national team.

Personally I’d have the same fear about how the World Cup would negatively affect Low taking the Arsenal job. The Premier League transfer window is now a lot shorter, ending on August 9th. The World Cup doesn’t end until July 15th.

That means if Low started the day after the end of the competition, he would have 25 days to meet, get to know and analyse Arsenal’s squad, then to negotiate with and sign any new players. It sounds like the worst possible way to start a new job.

Plus it would leave the club hanging with no manager for months. How is that going to go down with players stalling on contracts?

When a big club comes in for Aaron Ramsey in June, is he going to turn them down because he believes in the plan of a manager he’s barely even met?

I’d rather get someone in the day the season ends, give them some time to adjust. Give them the opportunity to talk to the players, then go on a full pre-season with them. I’m not sure Low allows us that chance.
