Luke Freeman, formerly of the Arsenal youth academy, is in the top 50 Football League players for the season according to FourFourTwo, after fans voted him in.

For the May edition of their magazine, FourFourTwo survey fans from around the Football League to come up with their ranking. 26-year-old Luke Freeman ended up in the number 44 spot on the list.

“The former Arsenal and Bristol City wideman is thriving in a central role at Loftus Road,” they wrote. “[He is] having his most productive season to date. A keen technician with a fine left peg, he kicked off the season in blistering form…to bag eight assists by Christmas.”

I can’t even pretend I’m surprised that an Arsenal youth player is racking up the assists. If there’s one thing this club is pretty good at teaching it’s passing. Look at Jack Wilshere and Alex Iwobi and their high eighties pass accuracy stats every season.

Freeman originally joined Arsenal in 2008, for a fee of around £200,000. Arsene Wenger described him as “a very interesting prospect” and “brave” with “a good positive personality”.

Now those traits are serving him well in the Championship with QPR. In total he has five goals and 12 assists in 44 appearances this campaign.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like he’ll be showing his skills in England’s top flight anytime soon. QPR are 15th in the table despite his efforts, with any playoff hopes long killed off. Still, it’s good to hear that a former Arsenal man has found somewhere to shine.
