Fabio Capello has called time on his managerial career amid links to the job at Arsenal, according to quotes in the Italian media.

In recent weeks, Capello became the latest name on the growing list of possible managers to replace Arsene Wenger and at one point was even named as a frontrunner.

From the sounds of things though, he doesn’t plan on taking the Arsenal job, or any managerial job for that matter.

First he seemed to suggest he was heading for retirement in an interview broadcast by Rai.

“The experience in China with Jiansu was my last effort on the bench,” he said. “I’ve stopped.”

La Gazzetta dello Sport then spoke to the 71-year-old to confirm the news.

“All true,” he told the Tuesday edition of the Italian paper. “I did what I wanted, I am happy with my career and now I will continue to have fun as a commentator on television, and travelling between Lugano, Italy, Spain and London.”

Capello has 36 years of managerial experience, starting from when he took over the AC Milan youth team in 1982.

It’s not surprising to hear that he finally wants to step back. Now he can enjoy the game a bit more, as a spectator and pundit.

Where did the Arsenal links come from?

The former England manager was given as one of the frontrunners according to the S*n, who are tracking odds with the bookmakers.

It seems people are just looking for every and any manager they can link to the job in order to generate some hits.

Capello recently left his job as manager of Chinese side, Jiansu Suning, by ‘mutual consent’ after a poor start to the season. This was his first job in management in three years since the Russia job.

Once one of the top managers around, Capello has not been in charge of a big club since 2007, when he finished a year-long stint as manager of Real Madrid.

It’s absurd that the media linked him with the Arsenal job in the first place. Now, however, it seems those rumours are completely dead.
