Bernd Leno wants to activate a ‘get-out’ clause in his contract to allow him to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer, according to reports in Germany.

Bild report that Leno plans to utilise the clause, which would allow him to leave for £17.5m this summer. His current deal runs to 2020, but this way he could move on early. Leverkusen’s Sports Director Rudi Voller called it “speculation” for now, but it could develop into more very quickly.

Arsenal have previously shown an interest in the goalkeeper, so they’ll surely take note of this latest development.

Leno previously insisted he would only leave Germany to be number one somewhere though. He is starting to get national team caps, and clearly doesn’t want to throw that away moving to be a back-up.

Most likely that won’t be a problem at Arsenal. David Ospina publicly stated his intentions to leave last summer, and his contract expires in 2019.

Petr Čech hasn’t made a solid case to keep the spot this season either. The 35-year-old (36 in May) is up to six errors directly leading to goals in the league this season.

It’s unlikely both will stick around this summer, and even if they do, Arsenal need someone to compete with them anyway. We’ll see if the club decide Leno fits the bill.
