Jack Wilshere is set to leave Arsenal unless the club make a significantly higher contract offer, according to reports.

The S*n claim player and club are still ‘miles apart’ in negotiations, and there’s ‘no chance’ that Wilshere will sign the current offer. The midfielder is supposedly stunned by the suggestion that he takes a pay cut on his base salary.

Wilshere also reportedly had to take a full medical before Arsenal would even make him an offer. He apparently feels that he deserves more after working so hard to prove his fitness.

Obviously we should take any news from from the S*n with a grain of salt. If the news is true though, Wilshere needs to keep the offer in perspective.

As mentioned, Arsenal are offering a lower basic wage (£90,000 vs £110,000), which seems a bit insulting on the surface. However, the deal is structured such that he’ll make more than £110,000-per-week when you factor in appearance bonuses.

If the 26-year-old was always fit, I expect the club would have just offered him a pay rise. Unfortunately he almost always picks up an injury at some point, even when he’s only playing weekly, like last season.

That makes him a risk, and it’s not like he’s outperforming all his teammates when he’s available. Much as we all love Jack’s passion and enthusiasm for Arsenal, we’ve been very patient with him on the injury and development fronts. I don’t think we owe him any more favours.
