Jack Wilshere may not be going to Russia this summer with his first injury of the season timed so badly it looks to have undone months of great work staying fit.

Unlike previous seasons, Jack Wilshere had been injury-free until he received an England call in this international break.

A small knee injury meant that he couldn’t feature for the Three Lions against the Dutch on Friday and speaking after the game, Gareth Southgate was fairly clear about Jack’s chances of making Russia.

Wilshere had been expected to return to the England squad for the friendly against England on Tuesday night but the midfielder will now sit that game out.

“He seemed to take a knock in the air and land a bit awkwardly, so we need to check that one,” said Southgate.

“It’s certainly not an ideal situation for Jack. But there’s a bigger picture.

“He’s still a young player who’s come back from serious injuries.

“Whatever happens over the next few months, there’s a longer future for Jack Wilshere that’s just as important as what happens over the next few months.”

Southgate is expected to name his World Cup squad in May when the season ends.

Despite his insistence that Wilshere is still a ‘young player,’ he will be 30 when the next World Cup rolls around.
