In late 2017, one of the players the media frequently linked to Arsenal was Hirving Lozano, but what happened to those rumours, and could a deal still happen this summer?

Lozano joined PSV Eindhoven last year, and made a fantastic start to life in the Netherlands. By the end of the year he already had 13 goals and 7 assists in just 20 games, all coming from his position on the wing. He also had four goals in his last five appearances for Mexico.

As a result, he was widely touted as an Alexis Sanchez replacement, given the Chilean’s impending departure. Spanish outlets reported a £42m bid from Arsenal for the player at the time.

When the January transfer window opened, suddenly all the rumours disappeared. Everyone was more interested in Manchester United’s Mkhitaryan and Dortmund’s Aubameyang.

My feeling is that this was largely because it became apparent Arsenal would need an experienced replacement immediately. They needed someone who could come in and solve the club’s current problems, not players to build for the future.

Plus, the fact Lozano only scored one goal in January probably killed the hype a bit.

Since then, the 22-year-old is back making headlines. He has two goals, three assists and one red card in his last five games. Still, there haven’t been any new links to Arsenal in that time.

Could a deal still happen this summer?

Arsenal are still in need of natural wide players, so I wouldn’t rule it out completely. The fact that central players like Danny Welbeck and Mesut Özil have played out wide a lot this season emphasises how limited the current options are.

That sending off in February was his second of the season, which starts to make his discipline a bit of a concern. Then again, Arsenal had no problems signing Granit Xhaka despite his similar record.

Overall though, I think Arsenal have bigger concerns at the moment. If they have to invest a lot of money to get Lozano I think they’d rather spend the cash somewhere else.

We’ll see if the rumours come back over the next few months though.
