Lucas Perez’s agent told Spanish media his client’s return to Deportivo wasn’t the best decision, after the 29-year-old was jeered by his own fans at the weekend.

Rodrigo Fernandez Lovelle spoke to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope about the move on Wednesday. Whilst he wouldn’t go as far as saying they regret the decision, he admitted they didn’t make the best choice.

“You don’t regret it [returning to Deportivo], but obviously it was not the best step,” Lovelle said. “It’s true that, looking at the situation, it was not the best decision.

“I still think he (Perez) would have taken the same decision because he is a Deportivo fan. Lucas has too much love and respect for this jersey and he would never say if he did regret returning.

“The player is sad because he came with all the enthusiasm and turned down better offers from a sporting and financial standpoint, because his dream was to return home.

“The season is not going individually and collectively as he had hoped for. He took a risk knowing that coming here it would have been more difficult for him to return to the [Spain] national team, and it hasn’t gone well.”

Maybe the player himself won’t admit his regret at the move, but the Deportivo fans are starting to. When the Spaniard went off with six minutes to go against Las Palmas, they whistled at his departure.

Why are the fans so upset with him?

In fairness, they have pretty good reason. The last time they saw their team win in the league was December 9th 2017. The last time Perez scored was even longer ago, on November 19th.

Perhaps he could get away with that if the team were performing well in general, but they aren’t. Deportivo are 19th in La Liga, seven points away from the closest team outside the relegation zone. With only nine matches left, their time is running out to avoid the drop.

Nothing will go for the Arsenal loanee individually at the moment either. He saw Diego Lopez save his weak penalty in a 0-0 draw with Espanyol last month. Before that, vandals tried to spray paint his house.

It’s fair to say Deportivo are unlikely to make his move permanent this summer.
