Danny Welbeck told the Arsenal matchday programme that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival has given him the competition he needs to make himself better and he’s embracing the competition and extra motivation.

“It’s competition and I embrace it,” Danny said.

“Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve been playing for an academy with scouts all over the world that are looking for top players to come in.

“You have competition throughout your whole life and it only makes you better.

“That competitive edge gives you extra motivation.”

Welbeck has not endured the most fruitful of campaigns so far and has, I’m afraid to say, become a bit of a joke amongst the Arsenal fans

Although they admire his work ethic and the selfless nature of his play, it’s hard to look at him as a forward and take the whole thing seriously when he falls over more often than he gets shots on target.

Blighted by a series of injuries since arriving at Arsenal from Manchester United in 2014, Danny will be hoping he can finally put together a lengthy run of uninterrupted games.

Although he has featured in an impressive 30 games this season, he has seen only 1,603 minutes of action. On average, that’s around 53 minutes per game with a return of five goals and one assist to show for it.

Danny is out of contract with the club next summer but it is believed that all parties want to sign a new deal to keep him at the club.
