Atletico Madrid are now the favourites to sign Max Meyer on a free transfer this summer, according to reports.

The media have linked Arsenal and Liverpool with the midfielder recently. The 22-year-old reportedly turned down a contract extension last month with Schalke, which only added fuel to the flames.

We looked at the player as a possible replacement for Santi Cazorla, given his short stature, quick feet and creative abilities. Unfortunately, Bild now write that Atletico Madrid have managed to steal a march on the two English sides.

The German outlet claims the Spanish side are favourites as they look to add to their depleted squad. Yannick Carrasco and Nicolas Gaitan both left for the Chinese Super League, making their debuts for Dalian Yifang last week.

Despite the departures, Atletico still have a very strong side, particularly defensively, which could appeal to Meyer. His strengths are in possession of the ball, rather than winning it back, so Simeone’s side could be the best fit.

From an Arsenal point of view, Meyer could be a good addition to the squad. The team don’t currently have many players capable of building attacks from the back, which forces the likes of Özil and Mkhitaryan to drop deep.

If Cazorla is still out by summer, the German would be a low risk option on a free transfer. It looks like the club will have to move fast to get it done ahead of Atletico though.
