Arsenal will join Manchester United and Liverpool in trying to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho this summer, according to reports.

Metro report that the three clubs are all following the 26-year-old’s progress this season. Jose Mourinho is reportedly preparing a £50m bid, but he could have some competition. Meanwhile the player’s agent says he’s waiting for the end of the season to make a decision.

“It’s normal for European top clubs to keep players of this type in their radars,” said Joao Santos. “We’re waiting for May. We wish Napoli could win the league. Then if Napoli wants to renew the contract, we talk about it.

“The same if they want to sell Jorginho. There are no official and concrete proposals for him from UK. I don’t know if De Laurentiis will call me at the end of the season to extend the contract of the player. I suppose that.”

Jorginho has started 24 of Napoli’s 27 league games this season, helping them to the top of the table. They’re currently one point clear of Juventus, although last year’s Serie A champions have a game in hand.

The defensive midfielder could be just the kind of player Arsenal need at the moment. He is a very strong passer, but also contributes well out of possession.

Jorginho averages 2 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, and WhoScored list ‘concentration’ as one of his strengths. That would certainly be nice to have in an Arsenal midfielder.

By comparison, Granit Xhaka makes fewer tackles and interceptions, whilst also committing fouls more regularly. Unsurprisingly, concentration is one of his weaknesses.

If Arsenal have to compete with Manchester United and Liverpool, it’s going to be tough for them to convince the Italy international to join. Particularly as it looks like Arsene Wenger’s side might be the only one without Champions League football. We’ll see how the rest of the season pans out.
