Jack Wilshere is close to agreeing a contract extension, according to reports.

The new deal would have a lower basic salary with financial incentives related to his appearances.

Friday’s Telegraph and Daily Mail both write that the midfielder is ready to sign on to stay at Arsenal.

That’s good news for the Gunners given Wilshere’s current deal expires at the end of the season. If club and player can’t find an agreement before summer, he can leave for free.

The two reports disagree on exactly how much the 26-year-old would be paid though.

The Mail think Wilshere is currently on £100,000-per-week, and Arsenal want to reduce that to £80,000-per-week.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph say he’s going from £110,000-per-week to £90,000-per-week.

The Telegraph add that the Hale End Academy graduate never wanted to leave, even when Arsenal were ready to sell him last summer.

Clearly the Gunners don’t want to sell anymore, as Wilshere is now back in the team on a regular basis.

Hopefully the two parties can finalise their agreement soon.

The contracts of Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Wilshere have been hanging over the team all season.

It would be nice to move on to actual football for a while before we get to the inevitable Aaron Ramsey contract saga that is fast approaching.
