Arsene Wenger seems far more excited by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival than he ever did about Alexandre Lacazette’s.

Much like the fans, Arsene Wenger is happy to have a striker of Aubameyang’s quality at his disposal.

The 28-year-old scored his first Arsenal goal in the 5-1 win over Everton on Saturday night.

Speaking after the game, the manager explained what impressed him the most.

“The quality of his movement, I must say,” he told Arsenal Player.

“When you analyse well where he goes and when he goes, it’s always what you want from a striker, and even then I believe he is not completely 100 per cent fit physically. But the quality of his movement and the quality of his finishing was very good.”

Aubameyang wasn’t the only Arsenal striker to score on his debut this season.

Lest we forget, Alexandre Lacazette scored on his too in the 4-3 win over Leicester at the start of the season.

Wenger was impressed with him as well, but in six months, has never been as complimentary about the Frenchman as he was about Aubameyang after one game.

His thoughts post-Leicester focused on his adaptability more than his individual qualities as a striker.

“Lacazette is simple in every game. He is stronger since he has joined us, you know and even when I played Giroud through the middle and him on the left, he did very well on the left, so overall I think he adapts slowly to the way we want to play and he is a collective player and an intelligent player as well.”

Wenger highlighting Lacazette’s part in the team collective is a recurring theme. This is what he said after his first goal for the club in a friendly against Sydney FC:

“It is important for him to get that [first goal] off his shoulders because you expect to score if you are a striker.

“You could see that he was happy but overall what we were looking for was to play at pace and to develop our collective game and for long periods in the game that was quite good for us.”

And this is what he said after the 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Emirates Cup:

“For a striker it’s vital. I think he has shown some good things. He was not involved a lot because we didn’t have a lot the ball today, like we’re used to having, and the strikers suffer from that. Overall, what he has done is good.

“It’s his strength. He has a very strong record in scoring goals and that comes from the fact that he is in the right positions in the box and anticipates well. Overall, that is a very important quality that will be needed throughout the season.”

Wenger’s comments give an interesting insight into how he views both players.

It could be that Lacazette isn’t the main striker in his mind. He compliments the rest of the team well, but perhaps doesn’t have the individual quality that Aubameyang possesses.

Almost like another French striker who has only just left…
